Passage runs five trips a year. Not fifty, and not a catalogue: five, each one walked twice before it was ever sold, each one led by somebody whose name is on this page. When a departure fills, it closes. We would rather turn you down than add a thirteenth seat.

March is genuinely cold at altitude and priced for it. If you have the choice, October walks better and the villages are mid-harvest.

July is the busy month on those paths. September is emptier, the huts are quieter, and the light is better for everything except swimming.

How a trip gets planned

Eighteen months, two research walks, and one number we will not move.

We walk it twice, once in the wrong month

Every route is walked in the best month it could run, and then again in the worst month we would ever sell it. The second walk is the one that changes things: it is where the long day gets shortened, the exposed section gets a bad-weather alternative, and two guesthouses quietly get dropped.

Two leaders, one of whom lives there

Every departure runs with a Passage leader and a co-guide who lives in the region. We contract co-guides for a full season rather than by the day, so the person meeting the group in March is the same one meeting it in October. We do not resell another operator's departure under our name.

Why twelve is the ceiling

Twelve is the largest group that still fits around one table, into one vehicle, and along a single-file path without anybody needing a radio headset. Above twelve you are managing a crowd instead of leading a walk. Below eight the trip stops paying for the co-guide, so eight is the floor.

The price on this page is the price

Departure prices are set each September for the following year and they do not move afterwards, in either direction, once a departure is open for booking. If a group fills at eight instead of ten, that is our problem to solve, not a surcharge that turns up on your invoice in month nine.

Faroes on Foot, all nine days of it

This is the level of detail every Passage trip is written at, and the other four are written exactly the same way. Distances are measured, not estimated, and the overnight village is named so you can look at where you are sleeping before you pay for it.

Land any time before four. We meet at five in the guesthouse lounge, walk down for dinner in the village, and go through the week with the map on the table.

Over the ridge on the route the mail used to take, down into the village above the waterfall, and back around the lake in the afternoon.

Crossing to Mykines

Boat if the sea allows it and helicopter if it does not, which is a coin toss we have lost happily many times. Puffins on the headland either way.

The full length of the island to the light and back along the cliff edge, with a long lunch sitting on the grass where the gannets are.

A short day on purpose. The tidal lagoon, the turf roofs, and an afternoon with nothing scheduled in it after four days that were full.

Tjornuvik to Gjogv over the ridge

The big one. Up out of the bay, along the spine with water on both sides, and down into the gorge village in the late afternoon.

Kalsoy and the Kallur light

Two ferries and a tunnel to reach the ridge everybody photographs. We go early, so the photograph has nobody else in it.

Torshavn, no alarm

A free day in the capital: the old turf-roofed quarter, the harbor, the swimming pool, or nothing at all. Dinner together at eight, everyone invited, nobody required.

Homeward

The weather rewrites about one day in three out here. That is the trip, not a failure of it, and every alternative on this itinerary has already been walked by the person leading you.

The four people who lead them

Passage is eleven people run out of two rooms above a bike shop in Missoula. These four are the ones you will actually be walking behind.

Iris Halvorsen

Faroes, Dolomites · Leading since 2011

Trained as a geologist, which is why the Faroes walk keeps stopping at road cuttings that nobody else has noticed. Has been rained on in the Faroes on 61 days out of a possible 63 and still calls it the best weather in Europe.

Kei Watanabe

Kumano · Leading since 2014

Walked the Kumano routes for three years, in every season, before we would let him sell one of them. Carries a thermos up every hill and will pour you tea at the top whether or not you asked for it.

Noor Bennani

High Atlas · Leading since 2016

Grew up an hour from the trailhead and knows which houses in which villages are worth stopping at. Handles the mules, the paperwork, and the annual argument about how early to leave for the pass.

Tomas Aguirre

Patagonia · Leading since 2009

Nineteen seasons in Aysen, most of them before there was a paved road anywhere near it. Reads the afternoon weather off the surface of the lake and is right more often than the forecast is.

Drinks beyond what is already on the table at the included dinners
Tips for the co-guide and drivers, which are optional and pooled if you leave them
The single supplement, $690 on this trip and priced separately on each of the others

If something you care about is not on either list, it is because we forgot it. Write and ask, and we will add it here for the next person.

How to book

Three numbers and one sentence about changing your mind.

Deposit $600

Per person. It holds the place for good and comes straight off the balance. We never take a deposit on a departure that is already full.

Balance due 90 days out

Bank transfer or card, and we do not charge you differently for either. One invoice, one reminder, no drip of small extras afterwards.

Changing departures Free to 120 days

Move to any other 2027 departure at no cost up to 120 days before you go. After that we do whatever we can, and we tell you plainly what that is.

Tell us which trip, and roughly when.

Two lines is plenty: the trip, the month, and how many of you. Marta runs the office and answers every inquiry within one working day, usually with a question of her own. Full cancellation terms come with the invoice, in plain English, before you pay anything.
